Which One Fits Your Yard

Access matters. A steeply sloped or hard-to-reach lot can make excavation expensive fast. Above ground sidesteps most of that.

Time matters. In-ground is a season. Above ground is closer to a project than a construction job.

Permanence matters. If this is your forever house, in-ground usually wins. If you are five years out from moving, think twice.

Above Ground Pools
An above ground pool gets you swimming for a fraction of the cost and in a fraction of the time. No major excavation, far less disruption to the yard, and if you move, some of them move with you.

They also do not have to look temporary. Built into a deck, with proper surround and lighting, an above ground pool reads as part of a finished outdoor space rather than something parked on the lawn. We build the decking too, which is usually the difference between the two.
In-Ground Pools
An in-ground pool is the permanent version. It becomes part of the property, it can be shaped to the yard, and it carries the most options for depth, water features, and integrated decking. It is also the bigger project: excavation, longer build time, and more site work.

We offer a range of material options and will walk you through what each means for cost, lifespan, and how it holds up through Montana winters. That conversation is worth having before you have picked a shape.

Fall Closings and Winterization
This is the one that matters in Montana. Water left in lines and equipment freezes, and freezing water breaks things that are expensive to replace. Proper winterization means blown lines, drained and stored equipment, balanced water, and the cover on correctly.

A closing done badly does not show up in October. It shows up in April when you open the pool and find a cracked pump housing.

Cover off, equipment back online, water balanced and running clear before the first warm weekend rather than three weeks after it.

Covers
Automatic covers pay for themselves in heat retention and in the hours you do not spend skimming. They also matter for safety if you have kids or dogs, which for a lot of families is the deciding factor rather than a bonus.

Decide on heating and cover before the build starts. Retrofitting either one is more expensive and more disruptive than including it from the beginning.
Heating
We install pool heating and will size it to your pool and how you actually plan to use it. A pool you swim in every evening in May has different requirements from one you want warm for two weekends in September.
An unheated pool in western Montana is a July and August pool. That is a lot of money for two months, and it is the single biggest thing to plan for at the design stage rather than after.

A heater and a cover together are what turn two months into four or five. The heater does the obvious work. The cover does the quiet work, holding overnight heat so the system is not starting from cold every morning, which is where the operating cost actually goes.

A pool is the biggest project in this catalog and the one with the most decisions attached. Type of pool, where it sits, how it drains, what goes around it, whether you want to swim in May or just in July. Most of that gets settled in one conversation.

Building in Montana adds a layer. Freeze and thaw, a shorter build season, and a shorter swim season unless you plan for heating and a cover from the start. Those are decisions to make at the design stage, not after the shell is in the ground.
​
A pool also rarely stays a pool. The decking, the surround, a fire feature at one end, a covered spot to eat: we build all of it, so it can be designed as one project instead of a pool followed by three years of adding things around it.
