American Whirlpool Hot Tubs and Swim Spas: The Complete Buyer's Guide
Updated: Sep 28

If you're shopping for a hot tub in Western Montana, you've probably noticed that every brand says it's the best. We sell American Whirlpool hot tubs and swim spas exclusively, and we carry every style they make, so we wanted to put everything in one place: what makes them different, what they're built from, what the warranty covers, and a full breakdown of every model in the lineup.
This is a long one. It's meant to be a buyer's guide you can come back to. Use the table of contents below to jump straight to what you care about.
Table of Contents
What Makes American Whirlpool Different
Most hot tubs look alike from the outside. The differences are in the parts you never see once it's set up: what's holding it up, what's keeping the heat in, and whether a technician can actually get to the plumbing years from now. That's where American Whirlpool stands apart.
A steel frame instead of wood. American Whirlpool calls its 400 Series, 800 Series and swim spas "Appliance Grade" because they're built on a steel sub-structure, the way a dishwasher or range is. American Whirlpool describes them as the world's first steel-frame hot tubs, and the steel structure carries a lifetime warranty.
No spray foam in the cabinet. Many brands fill the cabinet with expanding foam. It insulates, but it also buries the plumbing. American Whirlpool uses a layered insulation system instead, so the whole tub can be serviced back to factory specifications right in your backyard.
Insulation built for cold country. The Northern Exposure insulation system uses a reflective copper lining, recycled-fiber BlueMAAX insulation and 3M Thinsulate, the same material used in winter clothing. It comes with a lifetime insulation warranty.
Massage designed around your body. Zone Therapy seating was designed with medical specialists in physical rehabilitation and massage therapy. The idea is simple: more jets don't automatically mean a better massage. The right size jet in the right spot does.
Serious water care. A four-step filtration system plus optional CleanZone ozone or CleanZone Ultra (ozone plus UV-C) sanitization. At Big Sky, we add the best CleanZone system each model supports as standard.
Who Builds American Whirlpool
American Whirlpool hot tubs and swim spas are manufactured by MAAX Spas Industries Corp. in Chandler, Arizona. The company has been designing hot tubs for more than 40 years, and several of the features you'll read about below, including Zone Therapy, Foot Relief Zone, Comfort Collar, Northern Exposure and DuraMAAX, are their own trademarked designs.
Materials and Construction
Steel Frame, Appliance Grade Structure
The frame is the backbone of the whole hot tub. On the 400 Series, 800 Series, the 982 and every swim spa, that frame is steel. Steel gives better structural integrity than wood and won't rot, warp or crack over time. It's also paired with the Northern Exposure insulation system in a way that leaves the plumbing and equipment accessible, so the entire tub can be serviced on site. American Whirlpool builds these tubs to the same service and safety standards as other home appliances, and the steel structure carries a lifetime warranty.
The 200 Series uses a hybrid sub-structure, and the 100 Series uses a treated wooden frame. Those are solid, well-built tubs at a more approachable price point, but if the steel frame is a deciding factor for you, look at the 400 Series and up.
Continuous Cast Acrylic Shells
Every American Whirlpool hot tub has an interior made from continuous cast acrylic. It's a hard, non-porous surface that resists stains, fading, scratches and chemical wear, and it's a step up from the softer plastic surfaces used on some budget tubs. It comes in six finishes with a pearl or metallic look:
Avonite Wave
Silver Marble
Midnight Canyon
Smokey Mountain
Storm Clouds
Tuscan Sun
(The 982 is offered in Silver Marble, Midnight Canyon and Tuscan Sun.)

Acrylic shell colors from American Whirlpool's 2025 brochure. Their website also shows a Glacier Mountain finish, so ask us which colors are available for the model you're considering.
DuraMAAX Cabinetry
The cabinet (the outside "skirt" of the tub) is DuraMAAX, a wood-alternative material that looks and feels like wood without the upkeep. It's impact resistant, stands up to weather and insects, and won't splinter, crack or rot. That means no staining or sealing every summer. It also helps hold heat in and keep cold air out. Cabinet colors are Charcoal, Light Fog and Modern Mocha.
ABS Sealed Base
Steel-frame models sit on a one-piece ABS sealed base. It seals the bottom of the tub, locking heat in and keeping moisture and critters out. The 200 Series uses a molded bottom pan, and the 100 Series uses an HDPE sealed base.
Built to Be Serviced
This one gets overlooked, but it matters. Conventional foam-filled hot tubs are hard to repair. A technician has to dig through foam to find a leak, and the tub often gets damaged in the process. Because American Whirlpool's steel-frame tubs don't rely on spray foam, a technician can get to every part of the structure and bring it back to factory specifications at your home.
Insulation: Why It Matters in Montana
In Missoula, your hot tub is going to spend months running in below-freezing weather. How well it holds heat affects your power bill and how hard your equipment works.
Northern Exposure (400 Series, 800 Series, 982 and Swim Spas)
Northern Exposure is a three-layer thermal barrier:
Copper IR reflector. All four sides, the floor and the cover are lined with reflective copper material. It bounces radiant heat from the pumps back into the tub, where it's absorbed into the plumbing and helps keep the water warm. American Whirlpool calls this recycling "free heat."
BlueMAAX insulation. Made from recycled natural fiber and approved by the U.S. Green Building Council. It's treated with a borate-based solution to prevent mold, mildew and pests, and acts as a fire retardant. It replaces the urethane foam used in foam-filled tubs.
3M Thinsulate. The whole exterior is wrapped in the same insulation used in winter jackets.
It comes with a lifetime insulation warranty, meaning the insulation is warranted to keep the same insulation value it had when it was built.
Thermo-Lock (100 and 200 Series)
The 100 and 200 Series use Thermo-Lock insulation. It's a solid system. If you want the most efficient option for Montana winters, though, Northern Exposure is the one we point people toward.
A Quieter Tub
The same insulation also deadens sound. American Whirlpool rates its tubs at about 42 dBA in filtration mode and 61 dBA at full operation measured 20 cm away, dropping to 40 and 56 dBA at 4 meters. For reference, a normal conversation is about 60 dBA and a library is about 40.
Warranty: What's Covered
Here's what American Whirlpool publishes about its warranty:
Lifetime steel structure warranty on steel-frame models. The steel frame is the backbone of the spa, and it's covered for life.
Lifetime insulation warranty on the Northern Exposure system. The insulation is warranted to keep the same insulation value it had at the time of manufacture.
Limited warranty from MAAX Spas that covers the spa structure, surface, plumbing, pumps, heater, blower and controls.
A few things to know:
Coverage terms (how many years each component is covered) can vary by series and are spelled out on the warranty card that ships with your tub. Ask us and we'll walk you through the exact card for the model you're looking at.
The warranty card needs to be completed with your model and serial number and returned after installation. When we install your tub, we'll help make sure it gets registered.
The limited warranty applies to the first retail purchaser.
Like any hot tub warranty, it doesn't cover damage from improper installation, improper maintenance or water care, misuse, accidents, fire, or normal wear and tear. This is one of the reasons a professional install and a maintenance plan are worth it.
Massage and Comfort Systems
This is where the models really start to differ, so it helps to know what each feature does before you look at the lineup.
Zone Therapy
American Whirlpool's signature massage system. It was designed by specialists in physical rehabilitation and massage therapy to target pain zones that contain muscular trigger points. Instead of covering a seat in jets, Zone Therapy places the correct size jet and massage action exactly where it does the most good, for everyday stress, sore muscles, stiff joints or better sleep. Found on the 470, 471, 472, 480, 481, 880, 881 and 982.
Performance Seating
American Whirlpool's patented zero-gravity seating. Each seat is molded for full body immersion and good posture, matched to its jet pattern, to take stress off your lower back. Seats come in a variety of shapes and sizes so everyone can find one that fits.
Comfort Collar
A molded neck cushion with built-in jets that massage your neck and shoulders. American Whirlpool compares it to having your neck massaged by a loved one, and it's one of the reasons many people choose an American Whirlpool.
X-Series Collar (Option)
Replaces the Comfort Collar in the deep corner seat to make the seat larger. It's a good choice for bigger frames or anyone who wants more room to move.
Shoulder Relief Zone
A newer feature on the 800 Series. Four jets are set at the shoulders: the two center jets work around the spine, and the outer two focus on the back and side of the shoulder. It's aimed at upper-back and shoulder tension, the kind you get from sitting at a desk or driving all day.
Foot Relief Zone, Foot Dome and Calf Zone
Dedicated jets for your feet and lower legs. The Foot Relief Zone and Foot Dome target the soles of your feet. The 472 adds a Calf Zone.
Shiatsu Seat and Deep Tissue Hamstring Jets
The 470, 471, 480, 481, 880 and 881 each include a dedicated Shiatsu seat. The 880 and 881 add Deep Tissue Hamstring Jets for the backs of your legs.
TheraMAAX II Stainless Steel Jets
Standard on every model. A grill around the jet nozzle is designed to reduce drag and keep the water stream strong, and the three-spoke stainless steel face makes it easy to turn the power up or down.
AeroMAAX Plus (Option)
Adds 10 air jets throughout the tub for a gentler, bubbly massage that promotes blood flow. Available on the 460 and up in the 400 Series, and on the 800 Series.
Water Care Systems
Four-Step Filtration
Weir door breaks the water's surface tension and traps floating debris.
First filter removes oils and fine particles down to 10 microns.
Basket catches debris before it reaches the filter, so it's easy to empty.
Oversized spa filter allows high-flow filtering so the water gets cleaned and returned quickly.
CleanZone
A cartridge-based ozone system that automatically helps keep water clear while cutting down on chemical maintenance.
CleanZone Ultra
Combines ozone with UV-C light, the same kind of technology many communities use to purify drinking water. American Whirlpool rates it to kill 99.9% of microorganisms, bacteria, viruses and parasites. It's available on the 270, 271, 280, 281, 282, the 460 and up, the 800 Series, the 982 and the swim spas.
At Big Sky, we add CleanZone ozone and UV sanitization as standard on every tub that can take it. Models that don't support CleanZone Ultra get the CleanZone ozone system.
Aqua Klean Filtration (200 Series)
A dealer-installed filtration upgrade available on 200 Series models.
Controls, Lighting, Sound and Covers
Touch Screen Topside Control
Standard on the 400 Series, 800 Series and the 982. You change the temperature from the home screen and reach every other feature through a selection wheel. The screen also shows messages and reminders so you know how the tub is running.
Direct Drive 56-Frame Pumps
All 240-volt American Whirlpool models use Direct Drive 56-frame pumps. They're larger, more powerful motors without mechanical switches, so they run cooler and last longer.
Lighting by Series
100 Series: Dynamic LED interior lighting, no cabinet lighting
200 Series: Dynamic LED interior lighting and 2 corner cabinet lights
400 Series: Digital color optic lighting, chromotherapy on most models, illuminated controls and drink holders, and corner plus front cabinet lighting
800 Series and 982: Everything in the 400 Series plus 4 corner and 4 side cabinet lights
Most models also have Aurora Cascade water features, and many have an illuminated, ergonomic massage controller for adjusting jet pressure.
Bluetooth Music and Sound System (Option)
The Bluetooth Music System adds two built-in speakers you can stream to from your phone. The upgraded American Whirlpool Sound System adds a subwoofer built into the spa's structure, so you hear and feel the music through the water.
Weather Shield Insulating Cover
American Whirlpool's premium cover has a copper lining, a tailored fit to hold heat in when it's cold, and removable heat-sealing pillows so you can vent extra heat in summer. It also acts as an important safety barrier.

100 Series Hot Tubs
The 100 Series is American Whirlpool's entry point. You still get a continuous cast acrylic shell, DuraMAAX cabinetry, TheraMAAX II stainless jets, Thermo-Lock insulation, an HDPE sealed base, programmable filter cycles and a 3.5" underwater LED light. The frame is treated wood, and there's no cabinet lighting.
The big advantage: the 101, 151 and 160 can run on a standard 120V/15A circuit with an optional 15-foot GFCI cord, or be hardwired at 240V. That can save you the cost of a new 240V circuit.

Swim Spas
American Whirlpool swim spas (the PowerPool line) bring the same steel sub-structure, Northern Exposure insulation and stainless steel jets to a longer tub you can swim or exercise in all year. Every model has an LED illuminated swim lane, a 3.5" LED underwater light, digital color optic lighting and programmable filter cycles.
A quick way to read the lineup: the ML4, MB4, MX6 and DM8 use the MAAX Force swim jet system, which uses "anti-turbulence" technology for a smoother, adjustable current. The B layouts (RB4 and MB4) trade some open swim area for bench-style seating for up to 9.

Options on all swim spas: CleanZone or CleanZone Ultra, Bluetooth stereo, swim tether, low-impact exercise band kit, and exercise bands with rowing oars (adjustable pneumatic resistance). Specific options can vary slightly by model.
RF2

The most compact swim spa at about 12 feet. It seats 5, has 25 jets, two 3 HP pumps, PowerSwim jets for exercise, four Aurora Cascades and illuminated drink holders. It's a good fit if you want a hot tub that seats a crowd plus room for aqua fitness, but don't have space for a 14-footer.
RL4

A 14-foot swim spa with open water for swimming and 3 seats. It has 29 jets, two 3 HP pumps and six Aurora Cascades. It's a balance of swim space and relaxing seats.
RB4

The same 14-foot shell as the RL4, but with seating for up to 9. It has 29 jets and two pumps. It's the choice for families who want a swim spa that also works as a party-size hot tub.
ML4

The RL4 layout upgraded with a third pump and MAAX Force swim jets for a stronger, smoother current. It has 27 jets and 3 seats. American Whirlpool positions it for more serious swimmers.
MB4

Seating for up to 9 plus the MAAX Force swim system and three pumps. It has 27 jets. It's the best of both worlds in a 14-foot footprint.
RL5

A 15-foot swim spa with 56" deep water, the deepest in the lineup. It has 14 stainless jets, seats 3 and holds 2,100 gallons. It's built mainly for swimming and water exercise.
MX5

The same deep 15-foot shell as the RL5, powered by four pumps (two 3 HP 2-speed and two 2.5 HP) with 15 jets and an LED light at the front of the spa. It's a performance-focused swim machine.
MX6

About 16 feet long and 56" deep, with 42 jets, four pumps and the MAAX Force jet propulsion system. It seats up to 5, with two coach's chairs and two massage seats. It has four Aurora Cascades, DuraMAAX cabinetry and an ABS sealed bottom pan. It's a serious training pool that still gives you a place to sit and soak.
DM8

The largest swim spa at about 18 feet, and a true dual-zone design. The hot tub end has its own temperature control, so one person can swim in cooler water while others soak in a hot tub-temperature spa at the other end. It seats 8 and has 37 jets, four pumps, MAAX Force swim jets, four Aurora Cascades and illuminated drink holders.

How to Choose the Right Model

A few questions will narrow it down fast.
How many people will use it on a normal night? Size for your usual crowd, not the biggest party you'll ever throw. Two people who soak most nights will be happier in a 461 or 472 than in an 8-seater that costs more to heat.
Do you want to lie down? Lounges are great for one or two people, but they take up space that could be two upright seats. If you have a big family, a no-lounge model like the 270, 280, 470, 480 or 880 fits more people.
What are you using it for?
Relaxing and socializing: 200 Series, 270, 280
Sore muscles, back pain or athletic recovery: 470, 471, 480, 481, 880, 881 (Zone Therapy and Shiatsu)
Desk-job neck and shoulder tension: 880 or 881 (Shoulder Relief Zone), or any model with Comfort Collars
Couples: 261, 151, 461, 472
Tight spaces: 101, 250, 261, 451
No 240V circuit available: 101, 151, 160
Swimming and fitness: RL5, MX5, MX6, ML4, DM8
Fitness plus family soaking: RF2, RB4, MB4, DM8, or the 982 hot tub
How long do you plan to keep it? If you're thinking 15 years or more, the steel frame, Northern Exposure insulation and serviceable design of the 400 Series and up are worth a serious look, especially with Montana winters.
Where will it go? Measure the spot and the path to get there. A full 92" tub with water in it weighs roughly 4,400 to 5,300 lbs, and a swim spa can weigh about 11,000 to nearly 20,000 lbs. It needs a level, solid base. That's part of what we check during a site evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is American Whirlpool the same as Whirlpool appliances?
No. American Whirlpool hot tubs are made by MAAX Spas Industries Corp. in Chandler, Arizona. It's a separate company from the Whirlpool appliance brand.
Are American Whirlpool hot tubs good for cold climates?
Yes. The Northern Exposure insulation system on the 400 Series, 800 Series, the 982 and the swim spas was designed for efficient heating and heat retention, and it comes with a lifetime insulation warranty. For Western Montana, we recommend Northern Exposure models to anyone who plans to soak all winter.
Do I need a 240V circuit?
Most models, yes. The 101, 151 and 160 can run on a standard 120V/15A circuit with the optional GFCI cord, or be hardwired at 240V for faster heating. Every other model requires 240V (30A to 60A depending on the model). We'll help you figure out what your home needs. A new 240V circuit usually means an electrical permit too, and our step-by-step guide to building permits in Montana explains how that works.
How long does an American Whirlpool hot tub last?
It depends on the model, water care and maintenance. Steel-frame models are built so every component can be reached and serviced, and the steel structure carries a lifetime warranty, which is a big part of why they can last for decades.
What's the difference between a lounge and a regular seat?
A lounge lets you recline almost fully with your legs stretched out. It's very comfortable, but it uses the space of about two upright seats. If you usually soak with more than two or three people, a model without a lounge or with a single lounge is usually a better fit.
Can I swim in a swim spa, or is it just for exercise?
Both. The swim jets create a current you can swim against in place, and the MAAX Force models are designed for a smoother, more adjustable current. You can also use them for water walking, resistance training with the exercise kits, or just floating. The DM8 adds a separate hot tub zone with its own temperature.
Do you have every model on display?
Most American Whirlpool models are special ordered so you get the exact configuration and colors you want. Stop by the showroom or call, and we'll walk you through layouts, spec sheets and options, and help you narrow it down.
Specifications, features and options are based on American Whirlpool's current published materials and are subject to change by the manufacturer without notice. Contact Big Sky Outdoor Spaces for current details on any model.
